A sensational murder inside the Tihar Jail premises sent shockwaves on Tuesday when the incident came to the fore. Details that have emerged show the accused who stabbed another inmate inside the jail had been planning the murder for many years and had committed another murder so that he would be brought to Tihar and he could avenge the rape and suicide of his sister.
On Monday, 21-year-old Zakir stabbed Mohammad Mehtab (27), inside Tihar jail number 8/9.
Police have found out that Mehtab and Zakir had known each other for several years but things took a grave turn when Mehtab, who was a trusted acquaintance of the family, raped Zakir’s sister. The woman, who was underage at the time, later committed suicide.
Zakir then plotted revenge on Mehtab and in 2018 committed a murder to enter Tihar Jail. However, since he was below 20 years of age, he was lodged at a different section of the jail while Mehtab was in another part.
Zakir then began to wait for his time. As he turned 21, Zakir was moved to the same section as Mehtab but he was still not in the same ward. Zakir then started picking up fights with the inmates he shared his cell with and was soon shifted near Mehtab’s ward in jail 5 upon request.
As soon as he landed at Mehtab’s ward, he started plotting his murder. Zakir started observing the routine and after 2-3 days, he found out that the morning time would be ideal to execute his plan.
On June 29, as Tihar jail authorities called the prisoners for morning prayers, Zakir quickly moved to Mehtab’s cell while the other inmates had exited.
In no time, Zakir stabbed Mehtab in the neck, stomach and other body parts, inflicting deep wounds.
“During investigation, it was found that Mehtab was accused in the rape case of Zakir’s minor sister in 2014 at the Ambedkar Nagar police station area. The victim reportedly later committed suicide,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Deepak Purohit said.
